If you’ve landed on this page, then like me, you’re on a quest to find something original. It’s why I started this blog. It’s also a pretty great place to show some of my work. But we’ll get to that in a bit.
Beer, Hobbits and The Start of An Idea
About two years ago, my husband and I found ourselves in a riveting debate about a movie trailer we had just seen – the Hobbit and the battle of the five armies. It was a strangely heated debate considering we were both on the same side and eagerly awaiting the final movie. I guess it could have had something to do with the third round of beers we had just ordered or the fact that we’ve been together so long we’ve started sharing ideas, but the more I thought about it the harder it was to find anything original – to which my husband ardently agreed.
Thank God For Spongebob
Think about it. When was the last time you saw an original movie? Not some remake of a comic or a book? Worse yet, not some remake of a remake of a comic or book. It’s a pretty scary thought when you get down to it. Especially since some of my favourite escapisms are not original. Superman, Spiderman, Batman, X-Men, Avengers – all epic movies (even the remakes) … and all based on comic books. Vikings – cool idea … based on historical legends. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit. Dare I say it, even Game of Thrones. The list goes on. And the closest thing to an original movie/series I can think of is a yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea in a place called bikini bottom.
The Easy Way Out
I started to analyse everything I came across – books, movies, adverts, the way we speak, the clothes we wear. What I found wasn’t encouraging and led me to an even bigger issue. Have we become so lazy in life that we can’t even muster the energy to create something new? Or, was there simply nothing new to create? Since I seem to fall into the first camp, I did what anybody else would have done in my position. I took the easy way out. I started a blog and waited for somebody else to blow me away with their brand new, exciting and original idea.
The Not-So-Easy-Way Out
I found some pretty cool stuff out there. Some of it original. Some novel. A few big ideas. A few small ideas. Even some game-changing ones. And while I watched it all and analysed it on its originality merits, I realised I was nothing more than a spectator to someone else’s greatness. A witness to their success. Which was fine … until it wasn’t. So I decided to put myself out there. I decided to find the people making waves. I wanted to work with them, be inspired by them and hopefully one day inspire others too. But since the economy sucks and no one is hiring, I’m pretty much left to my own devices. So I’m sharing what I do and how I think with the world. Who knows? Maybe this will work. Maybe I will find these innovators and history makers. Maybe they’ll find me. Maybe I’ll stumble on something original. Maybe I won’t.
Only time will tell. Until then, my search continues.
